Mtubatuba, KwaZulu-Natal – A truck driver escaped harm after armed robbers targeted his broken-down vehicle on the N2 highway near Mtubatuba on Saturday afternoon. The incident occurred at a lay-by in an area known as a crime hotspot between Richards Bay and Itshelejuba Hospital outside Pongola.
The Zimbabwean-registered Shacman gas tanker experienced a mechanical failure, forcing the driver to stop. Robbers, armed with at least one panga, began siphoning diesel from the truck in daylight. When the driver approached, one robber chased him away.
The driver recorded the event on video and attempted to flag down passing vehicles for assistance, but several ignored his pleas. Taxi association security guards eventually stopped, armed with rifles. Their presence outnumbered and outgunned the robbers, who abandoned the stolen diesel and fled into nearby bushes.
No injuries were reported, and there was no mention of police involvement at the scene. The driver was able to avoid further confrontation due to the guards' timely arrival.
