East London, South Africa - Two security guards lost their lives in a violent cash-in-transit heist on August 18, 2025, in the city's central business district. The attack took place outside Kausers Cash & Carry on Buffalo Street around 7 a.m., disrupting traffic as authorities cordoned off the area for investigation.

The victims, both employed by Fidelity, were part of a team of three in an armored vehicle assigned to collect cash from the store. One guard entered the premises to retrieve the money and emerged carrying an orange bag. As he approached the vehicle to load the cash, with another guard standing nearby, four armed suspects in a silver-grey Hyundai ambushed them. An eyewitness reported hearing four gunshots during the confrontation. One suspect was observed wearing a blue overall and carrying a large firearm.

A 44-year-old guard was pronounced dead at the scene. The second guard sustained serious injuries and was transported to a hospital for treatment but later died from the wounds. The suspects seized an undisclosed sum of cash before fleeing.

The Hawks have taken over the investigation into the robbery and are pursuing leads. Authorities have called on the public to provide any information that could aid in identifying and apprehending the perpetrators. No arrests have been reported as of August 19, 2025.
