On April 10, 2025, a violent confrontation unfolded on Soutpan Road in Soshanguve, Tshwane, as police foiled an attempted cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery, resulting in the deaths of four suspects. The incident, which also left a bystander dead and two officers wounded, has highlighted the ongoing challenge of violent crime in the area.

According to Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, the robbery targeted a cash van on Soutpan Road. A group of armed suspects, operating from three vehicles, ambushed the van, overpowered the security crew, and used explosives to access the cash. As they fled with an undisclosed amount of money, members of the Tactical Response Team (TRT) intervened, initiating a high-speed chase through the township. The suspects opened fire on the pursuing officers, who responded with lethal force. In the ensuing gun battle, three suspects were fatally shot, and a fourth individual, identified as a bystander, was tragically caught in the crossfire and killed.

Eight suspects were apprehended during the operation, with three sustaining injuries. Police seized four unlicensed rifles, a handgun, ammunition, and eight vehicles linked to the crime. The swift response involved coordinated efforts from SAPS Counter Intelligence Investigation Head Office and the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) Gauteng Multi-Unit. Two TRT officers were also wounded and are receiving medical treatment.

The incident has left the Soutpan community shaken, with residents expressing frustration over the pervasive crime in their area. One anonymous local, aged 33, told YNews that daily exposure to violence has forced residents to adapt to a life of fear, particularly for vulnerable family members commuting to work. Another resident, 35-year-old Given Ramela, suggested that external criminals may be exploiting insider information from within the community to carry out such brazen attacks.

This botched heist follows a string of violent incidents in Soshanguve, including the March 2025 killing of six community patrollers at the Marry Me Informal Settlement. The recurring violence has sparked outrage, with community leaders and residents calling for stronger measures to curb crime. The loss of an innocent bystander in the April 10 shootout has further intensified demands for safer streets.

Police investigations are ongoing to determine the full scope of the criminal network behind the robbery. The incident underscores the dangers faced by law enforcement and civilians alike in confronting heavily armed gangs. As Soshanguve grapples with the aftermath, the community remains on edge, hoping for lasting solutions to restore safety.
