Avoca, KwaZulu-Natal – A driver fled the scene after a collision involving a red VW Jetta and a white Hyundai i10 on the N2 northbound lane near Avoca, KZN, on Friday, April 25, 2025, according to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA).
The incident occurred in the early afternoon, prompting passing motorists to contact RUSA’s Phoenix Operations Centre for assistance. Upon arrival, RUSA officers were informed by the occupants of the Hyundai i10 that the red VW Jetta had collided with their vehicle. No injuries were reported in the crash.

Following the collision, the driver of the VW Jetta reportedly contacted an individual, and an unidentified vehicle arrived shortly afterward. Witnesses observed alcohol being transferred from the damaged Jetta to the unknown vehicle. The driver then abandoned the Jetta on the highway and fled the scene in the unidentified vehicle, leaving the damaged car behind.
RUSA officers secured the scene, but the driver’s identity and whereabouts remain unknown. The South African Police Service (SAPS) is expected to investigate the incident, including the circumstances of the collision and the driver’s decision to flee.
This incident adds to a series of road-related incidents in KwaZulu-Natal, where reckless driving and hit-and-run cases have raised concerns. In recent months, the region has seen multiple collisions on major routes like the N2, including a January 2025 tanker crash near Salt Rock that disrupted traffic and required hazardous material handling. Authorities continue to urge drivers to exercise caution and remain accountable at accident scenes to ensure public safety.
Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact RUSA or SAPS to assist with the investigation.
