READ: A 73-Year-Old Woman Abducted in Kariega Suburb

Kariega, South Africa – A 73-year-old resident of Fairbridge Heights, Theresa Mini, was abducted outside her home early on Monday, August 11, 2025. The incident occurred at approximately 5:30 a.m. as she was departing her residence, when she was forced into a silver Polo hatchback.

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Captain Andre Beetge confirmed that the case is under active investigation. Authorities reported no ransom demands have been made as of yet. Police are present at the scene to gather evidence.

Kidnappings in South Africa have surged by 260% over the past decade. In the 2023/2024 financial year, 17,061 such incidents were reported nationwide.

The upward trend persists into 2024/2025, with 4,571 cases documented in the fourth quarter (January to March 2025), reflecting a 6.8% increase from the prior comparable period. Gauteng province accounts for the highest volume, with 2,499 kidnappings in the October to December 2024 quarter alone. Many cases involve extortion, and child abductions are also rising.
