On the morning of May 10, 2025, a minibus taxi carrying multiple passengers overturned on the P34 Natal Spa road near Vryheid, KwaZulu-Natal, injuring 13 individuals. Preliminary reports indicate the vehicle struck a pothole, causing a tire to burst and the driver to lose control, resulting in the taxi overturning.

KwaZulu Private Ambulance Service responded swiftly to the scene, where paramedics provided immediate medical care. The 13 injured passengers, with injuries ranging from minor to serious, were stabilized and transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment and observation.

Minibus taxis are a critical mode of transport in South Africa, serving millions daily, particularly in rural and urban areas. However, the industry is often criticized for unsafe driving practices. Overloading, speeding, and disregarding traffic rules are common issues, contributing to frequent accidents. Poor road conditions, such as potholes on routes like the P34, exacerbate these risks. According to Arrive Alive, taxis were involved in numerous fatal crashes in KwaZulu-Natal in recent years, highlighting the need for stricter regulation and road maintenance.

Local authorities are investigating the incident, focusing on the pothole, vehicle condition, and driver behavior. Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
