Durban, May 9, 2025 – The Sharks delivered a commanding 29-10 victory against the Ospreys in their Vodacom United Rugby Championship (URC) clash at Kings Park on Friday night, earning a crucial bonus point to draw level with the Vodacom Bulls on log points. However, the win was overshadowed by a potential injury setback for Springbok lock Eben Etzebeth.

Etzebeth, who left the field on a golf cart in the 27th minute with a suspected knee injury, had only recently returned from an extended absence due to concussion issues and a hamstring strain. Sharks head coach John Plumtree expressed cautious optimism post-match, suggesting the injury might be a hematoma and hoping for a swift recovery. “He’s a quick healer, but we’ll know more after a scan,” Plumtree said, noting Etzebeth felt some improvement by halftime.

The wet conditions at Kings Park limited expansive play, turning the match into a tactical battle of kicking, set-pieces, and defense. Plumtree praised his team’s defensive effort and their clinical execution in the Ospreys’ 22, particularly highlighting the contributions of loose forwards and tight five players like Jason Jenkins. The Sharks’ scrum faced early challenges but stabilized as the game progressed.

The victory marked a special milestone for hooker Bongi Mbonambi, who celebrated his 50th cap for the Sharks. Plumtree noted the team’s determination to deliver a strong performance in his honor.

Looking ahead, the Sharks face the Scarlets in their final URC league-stage match. Adding a personal touch, Plumtree mentioned the upcoming opportunity to see his son, Taine, who is likely to feature at No. 8 for the Scarlets. “It’ll be good to see him,” Plumtree said, expressing hope that Taine comes through his next match unscathed.

Despite the win, the Sharks remain fourth in the URC standings due to points difference, setting the stage for a critical final round.
