Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro has set his sights on disrupting Kaizer Chiefs’ game plan in the Nedbank Cup final, scheduled for Saturday at 3pm at Moses Mabhida Stadium. The Spanish tactician, who boasts an unbeaten record against Chiefs, is determined to maintain his dominance in the Soweto derby and lead Pirates to another trophy.

Speaking at Durban North College on Thursday, Riveiro expressed pride in reaching yet another final with Pirates. “It’s an honour to be in the final representing Orlando Pirates,” he said. “Since day one, this is what we’ve worked for, and we’ve been fortunate and worked hard to consistently reach finals.”
Riveiro emphasized a tactical approach, focusing on neutralizing Chiefs’ strengths while capitalizing on Pirates’ ability to control the game. “We want to make Chiefs play badly and ensure we play well,” he stated. “We’ve done it several times before, and our intention is to be better again.”
Reflecting on their recent Betway Premiership clash last weekend, where Chiefs took an early lead but Pirates fought back to win 2-1, Riveiro acknowledged the need for a stronger start. “We gave Chiefs too much advantage early on at FNB Stadium,” he admitted. “This time, we must start with more determination to take the game where we want it to go in the first half.”
Riveiro stressed the dynamic nature of a 90-minute match, describing it as “six or seven different games” where Pirates must outplay their rivals. With a clear focus on execution and adaptability, the coach is confident in his team’s ability to secure victory and continue their recent success against Amakhosi.
As the Nedbank Cup final looms, Riveiro’s strategic mindset and unbeaten record against Chiefs set the stage for an intense battle for silverware.
