Lenasia, April 29, 2025 – The high-profile R260 million SASSA fraud case resumed today at the Lenasia Magistrate's Court, with 11 suspects, including seven South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) employees, continuing their bail applications. The accused face over 1,300 counts of cybercrime, fraud, and theft, alleged to have orchestrated a sophisticated scheme to defraud the agency of funds meant for South Africa’s most vulnerable.
The case, which first emerged in 2024, involves accusations of creating fake profiles and committing identity fraud to siphon money from SASSA pay points into ghost accounts. Evidence includes forensic audits, intercepted communications, and bank records, contributing to repeated postponements as the defense reviews the extensive material.
During prior hearings, some accused, such as Phiwe Mkhuzangwe, claimed delays violated their rights, citing personal hardships like caring for ailing family members. The defense maintains their clients’ innocence, arguing the state’s evidence is largely circumstantial. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) is prepared to present key witness testimony, which could strengthen its case.
Public interest remains intense, with demands for swift justice to restore trust in SASSA. Today’s proceedings may see progress on bail decisions and the setting of a trial date, marking a critical step in this complex case.
