Kaizer Chiefs icon and former goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune has called on the current squad to seize the moment and win the Nedbank Cup for club chairman Kaizer Motaung in the upcoming final against Orlando Pirates. The highly anticipated Soweto derby showdown is set for Saturday at 3pm at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Khune, a key figure in Chiefs’ last major successes, emphasized the need to end the club’s nearly decade-long trophy drought, with their last major silverware coming in 2015 under coach Stuart Baxter. Speaking ahead of the final, Khune urged the players to deliver for Motaung, who has dedicated decades to building the club’s legacy.
“They must bring their A-plus game to win it for the chairman,” Khune said. “Doctor Motaung has invested so much in the players and infrastructure. He deserves to see his team lift a trophy after nine and a half years.”
Reflecting on his own achievements, Khune recalled captaining Chiefs to the Nedbank Cup and back-to-back league titles between 2012 and 2015, alongside the MTN8. However, he stressed that the current team cannot rely on past glories. “The players need to write their own history,” he said. “They must be tired of hearing about the 2013/14 team. This is their chance to make their mark.”
Khune highlighted the significance of reaching the final, having overcome tough opponents like Mamelodi Sundowns in the semi-finals. “The players should see this as a blessing and go out there to lift the trophy—not just for the chairman, but for the fans, themselves, and their families,” he added.
As Chiefs prepare to face their arch-rivals, Khune’s words serve as a rallying cry for a team determined to restore the club’s winning tradition and honor Motaung’s enduring legacy.
