Mthatha, South Africa – June 16, 2025 – The death toll from the catastrophic floods that struck the Eastern Cape has risen to 90, with two additional bodies recovered on Monday, according to Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane. The floods, triggered by torrential rains and strong winds starting June 9, 2025, have caused widespread devastation, particularly in the OR Tambo and Amathole District Municipalities, with Mthatha’s Decoligny village among the hardest hit.

Of the 90 fatalities, 60 are adults and 30 are children. The provincial government reported that post-mortems have been completed on 83 bodies, with 77 identified and released to their families. Search and rescue operations continue as several residents remain unaccounted for nearly a week after the deluge. Over 1,000 people have been displaced, with approximately 1,500 relocated to temporary shelters in community halls.

The floods have caused significant infrastructure damage, affecting 58 schools across the OR Tambo, Amathole, and Alfred Nzo districts and leaving nearly 500,000 homes without electricity. The South African Weather Service reported that the extreme weather, caused by a powerful cold front, has begun to subside, with stable conditions expected into the Youth Day weekend. However, the National Disaster Management Centre and provincial teams remain on high alert.

President Cyril Ramaphosa visited the affected areas on June 13, 2025, describing the floods as a “catastrophic disaster” linked to climate change. The provincial government has declared June 19, 2025, a day of mourning for the victims. International aid from countries including the United Arab Emirates and China, along with support from organizations like Gift of the Givers and the Al-Imdaad Foundation, is assisting affected communities.

Police Minister Senzo Mchunu commended ongoing search and rescue efforts while warning against looting, with reports of criminals targeting evacuated homes. The government has declared a state of disaster in the province to address the crisis and support recovery efforts.
