Germiston, East Rand – In a meticulously planned robbery, a group of unidentified suspects breached an FNB bank branch on Victoria Street in Germiston on April 22, 2025, using an underground tunnel to gain access. The audacious heist, which unfolded over the Easter weekend, has left authorities and the community in shock due to its sophistication.

According to police reports, the robbers tunneled into the bank, with evidence suggesting the entry point originated from a nearby property. Once inside, the suspects employed industrial grinders to cut open two safes, escaping with an undisclosed amount of cash. The exact sum stolen has not been publicly disclosed by the bank or law enforcement.

In a further display of precision, the perpetrators disabled the bank’s CCTV cameras and alarm system, delaying detection and allowing them to evade immediate capture. The break-in was discovered by security personnel in the early hours of April 22, after the bank had been reported secure when it closed on April 19.

The Germiston South African Police Service (SAPS), supported by forensic experts, is actively investigating the incident. No injuries were reported, and no arrests have been made as of yet. Authorities are working to trace the suspects and determine how they executed such a complex operation undetected in an urban area.

The FNB branch, located in the Golden Walk Shopping Centre, has been temporarily closed as investigations continue. Police are urging anyone with information to come forward to assist in the ongoing manhunt.

This incident marks a rare and elaborate bank robbery in South Africa, drawing comparisons to past tunneling heists, such as the unsolved 1977 Krugersdorp case. Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
