On April 25, 2025, a KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) resident was defrauded of R195,000 while attempting to purchase a 2023 white Ford Ranger Wildtrak for R550,000 in Umhlanga. The scam began with an online advertisement, leading the buyer to meet a seller’s representative at King Shaka International Airport. After inspecting the vehicle and transferring R195,000 via First National Bank, the seller claimed the funds hadn’t cleared and refused to release the bakkie.

Later, at a Verulam service station, two armed men in khaki uniforms, arriving in a white 2018 Ford Ranger double cab, forcibly took the vehicle, leaving the buyer empty-handed. Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) responded at 18:25, and a criminal case is under investigation to trace the perpetrators and recover the funds or vehicle.

This incident underscores the risks of private online vehicle sales. Authorities advise verifying seller identities, using secure payment methods, and meeting in safe public spaces like police stations. The investigation continues, with calls for anyone with information to assist.
