Los Angeles, May 2, 2025 – The South African Blitzboks are gearing up for the HSBC SVNS World Championship at Dignity Health Sports Park this weekend, with head coach Philip Snyman emphasizing a unified team effort to cap off the season on a high note. The tournament, the final event of the 2024/2025 HSBC SVNS series, pits South Africa against formidable Pool A opponents: Olympic champions France, Great Britain, and series winners Argentina.
Snyman reflected on the team’s season, which saw a mix of highs and lows but culminated in a fourth-place finish in the regular series—an improvement from the previous year. “This weekend in Los Angeles will define our season,” he said. “We’ve reviewed our performances, identified our strengths and weaknesses, and are fully focused on what lies ahead.”
The Blitzboks face a challenging pool stage, with matches scheduled against France at 21h12 on Saturday, Great Britain at 00h13 on Sunday, and Argentina at 03h46 on Sunday (SA times). Snyman acknowledged the strength of their opponents, noting, “We’ve had wins and losses against all three this season. It will come down to clinical execution and effort in each match.”
To bolster the squad, Snyman welcomed the addition of Ronald Brown, Mfundo Ndhlovu, and Quewin Nortje, who have brought fresh energy following a disappointing outing in Singapore. “Their inclusion has uplifted the team, and I’m pleased with their contribution to our preparations,” he said. The coach stressed that success will hinge on every player fulfilling their roles, with the team’s system designed to deliver results if executed well.
The Springbok Sevens squad, led by captain Selvyn Davids, includes Ryan Oosthuizen, Impi Visser, Zain Davids, Ricardo Duarttee, Ronald Brown, Siviwe Soyizwapi, Shilton van Wyk, Mfundo Ndhlovu, Quewin Nortje, David Brits, Zander Reynders, and Tristan Leyds.
With only the top eight teams competing, the Blitzboks are prepared for a grueling weekend. The top two teams from Pool A and Pool B (comprising Fiji, Spain, Australia, and New Zealand) will advance to Sunday’s semifinals. Snyman remains optimistic, stating, “We’re in a good space, ready to bring enjoyment, effort, and energy to the field.”
