Johannesburg, South Africa – A project manager employed by the Johannesburg municipality is set to face murder charges in court following the shooting death of a popular local DJ. The incident, which occurred in Randburg, has left the victim's family searching for answers amid an ongoing police probe.

Simphiwe Hadebe, the accused, allegedly shot and killed 34-year-old Ben Kholofelo Maphothoma on August 25, 2025. Maphothoma, who hailed from Mpumalanga province, worked as a resident DJ at Amigos Club in Randburg, where he entertained patrons with his music sets. The shooting took place in the area, and security cameras reportedly recorded the event, providing key evidence for investigators.

Details surrounding the confrontation remain limited, but family members of the victim have stated that Hadebe and Maphothoma had no prior acquaintance. The exact circumstances leading up to the gunfire are not yet fully disclosed, and authorities have not identified a clear motive at this stage. The tragedy has shocked the local community, particularly those in the nightlife scene where Maphothoma was a familiar figure.

Hadebe was taken into custody by police shortly after the shooting. He was subsequently granted bail and released pending further proceedings. The case has progressed through initial investigations, with law enforcement continuing to gather evidence to build their case.

The accused is scheduled to appear in court on December 5, 2025, where formal charges will be addressed. Prosecutors are expected to present details from the ongoing inquiry, including any forensic analysis or witness statements collected since the arrest.

This incident highlights ongoing concerns about gun violence in urban areas like Johannesburg, though specifics tying it to broader patterns have not been established. Police have urged anyone with additional information to come forward to assist in the investigation.

As the court date approaches, the victim's family continues to mourn the loss of Maphothoma, remembered for his contributions to the local music and entertainment industry. Authorities have assured the public that the matter is being handled with diligence to ensure justice is served.
