WATCH: Major collision as truck ploughs into several vehicles on the N3 near Cliffdale

A multi-vehicle crash occurred on the N3 highway near Cliffdale on September 4, 2025.

The incident took place on the Pietermaritzburg-bound carriageway during the morning hours. A truck lost control and collided with approximately 20 vehicles.At least 20 people were injured in the collision. Several individuals were trapped in the wreckage. No fatalities were reported.

The N3 was closed in both directions following the crash. The southbound lanes were temporarily closed to allow a medical helicopter to land. Later, the southbound right lane remained obstructed, while the northbound left lane was closed.

Traffic delays extended from Shongweni Interchange northbound and from Cato Ridge Interchange southbound.

ALS Paramedics responded to the scene with multiple units. A medical helicopter was used to evacuate injured persons.This crash highlights the risks associated with operating heavy motor vehicles. Driver-related factors, such as speeding and distraction, were recorded for 32 percent of large truck drivers involved in fatal crashes in 2021.

Loss of control was a critical event for 24 percent of large trucks in fatal crashes that year. Loaded tractor-trailers require 20 to 40 percent farther stopping distances than cars.
