ETHEKWINI, KZN – In a tense confrontation captured on body camera footage, officers from Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) engaged in a shootout with suspects involved in an attempted house robbery in the northern part of Durban on Tuesday.
The incident began when RUSA officers responded to reports of a break-in at a residence on Thompson Avenue in Lotusville, KwaZulu-Natal. According to details from the scene, armed individuals traveling in a white Hyundai i20 had forcibly removed a driveway gate and entered the home by breaking a window. Their intrusion was disrupted by a 17-year-old boy who was the only person present at the property at the time.
Upon the officers' arrival, the suspects were observed trying to escape. They accelerated away in their vehicle, leading to a pursuit that ended when they drove onto an unpaved road culminating in a dead end. The Hyundai crashed into an embankment in the Cornubia area of KwaZulu-Natal.
Following the crash, three of the suspects exited the vehicle and fled on foot. During the chase, two of them fired shots at the pursuing officers, prompting the RUSA team to return fire with their issued pistols. The exchange of gunfire was recorded approximately 10 seconds into the body camera video.
A subsequent search of the crashed vehicle revealed a fourth suspect hiding inside. This individual, identified as a 52-year-old man from Tanzania, provided information indicating that his three accomplices originated from Burundi in East Africa.
Despite a thorough search operation in the surrounding area, the remaining three suspects successfully evaded capture and remain at large. Authorities continue to investigate the matter, with the body camera footage serving as key evidence in the ongoing case.
