SOWETO, GAUTENG – A 23-year-old woman, Snenhlanhla Mathosi, was fatally stabbed by her ex-boyfriend at her workplace, a Pick n Pay store in Protea Glen Mall, Soweto, on May 4, 2025. The incident occurred late in the afternoon as Mathosi was preparing to end her shift.

According to Johannesburg police, the suspect, a 26-year-old man, was apprehended at the scene before he could flee. The family of the victim has demanded access to surveillance footage from the Pick n Pay store to gain clarity on the events leading to Mathosi’s death. Authorities have confirmed that the suspect is in custody and is expected to appear in the Protea Magistrate’s Court soon. No further details about the suspect or the legal proceedings have been released at this time.
The motive for the attack has not been officially confirmed, though posts on X suggest the stabbing followed the end of the couple’s relationship. Unverified reports indicate the weapon used in the attack may have been purchased at a nearby Shoprite earlier that day, but police have not corroborated this claim.
The incident has sparked grief and outrage in the community, with many calling for justice. The MMC for Public Safety, Mgcini Tshwaku, visited the crime scene and the Protea Glen Police Station to engage with authorities handling the case.
