BELLVILLE, Western Cape – On Monday, June 23, 2025, a Checkers Sixty60 delivery biker died following a collision with a South African Police Service (SAPS) vehicle on Voortrekker Road, in front of the Bellville Hockey Club entrance.

The incident occurred when the SAPS vehicle, reportedly driving in the oncoming traffic lane, collided with the delivery scooter. The motorcyclist, a male in his early 30s, was trapped between the pavement and the police van, leaving him with no means of escape. Emergency services arrived promptly, but despite medical efforts, the biker was declared deceased at the scene.

A video from the scene captured a woman crying and shouting, “Why did you overtake?” “Why did you do that?” and “Did you call the ambulance?” The footage suggests the SAPS vehicle may have been overtaking in the oncoming lane at the time of the crash. The video has not been shared publicly as it contains potential evidence.

The Western Cape SAPS confirmed that the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is investigating the incident to determine the cause and establish accountability. The investigation will examine claims of reckless driving by the police vehicle.

Voortrekker Road was temporarily closed to allow emergency personnel and investigators to process the scene. The deceased was transported to a pathology facility for further examination.

The SAPS and IPID have not released additional details pending the investigation’s outcome.
